Elettra Virtual Collaboratory: status and future developments

(R.Pugliese), F.Bille', S.Maraspin, A.Curri, A.Busato, M.Turcinovich, V.Chenda

The Elettra Virtual Collaboratory have now been operating for more than 3 years. The talk describes the results of this experience and presents the future developments relatate to EU and International initiatives and based on new emerging tecnologies like GRID and webservices. The EVC software was updated and extended in order to make it more modular and hence easily installable on other beamlines and experimental stations. The system is now installed in nearly all the beamline and experimental stations of Elettra. Moreover we have set up new virtual EVC stations in order to facilitate collaborative work between groups. We are now ready to update EVC using webservices and GRID technologies in the framework of the FP6 EU projects in which our group is involved. In particular EVC developments will be used to implement the VCS (Virtual Collaboratory System) in the BIOXHIT project. The VCS will permit the implementation of a VO (Virtual Organisation) which includes all the laboratories and facilities participating in the BIOXHIT initiative and involved in research in the field of High Throughput protein Crystallography. EVC core will be also used to implement the MVC (Multipurpose Virtual Collaboratory) in the EUROTeV project (the design study of the Linear Collider). The MVL will permit the implementation of a VO (Virtual Organisation) called GAN (Global Accelerator Network) which includes all the laboratories and facilities participating in the EUROTeV project and potentially in the future all the laboratories which are doing research in the field of accelerator physics all over the world. EVC experience will be also used in the GRIDCC (Grid Enabled Remote Instrumentation with Distributed Control and Computation) project. This project has been considered strategic in the field of IST research as tries to extend the GRID middleware in order to reach real-time and interactive performance. These project which is related to the LHC and involves among the others participants like IBM, Imperial College, CERN and INFN allows our group to participate in two out of four grand challenging research and technological projects of this century which are the LHC, the LC, ITER (International Fusion Reactor) and the Space Station.
