Much scientifically important data reduction, analysis and visualisation software has been developed over many years, often initially on VAX/VMS computers, and later on various types of Unix machines. Porting from traditional Unix versions to Linux is relatively straightforward providing a minimum of respect has been taken of international computing standards, and much useful software has been ported. However, the Windows interface is now almost unchallenged as a desktop interface. The implications of porting to a native Windows style application will be discussed, and arguments for and against adopting Windows will be presented.
