This talk gives an overview of the GDA Project which has evolved from work done on the SRS at Daresbury. The goal of the project is to produce a comprehensive object-oriented toolkit which can be used to quickly build data acquisition software systems which are highly configurable and easy to use. The software will form the basis of data acquisition at the new Diamond synchrotron and, to this end, a collaboration has been formed to develop the concept to meet the needs of the new facility. The talk will cover the history, current status and future of the project as well as how the collaboration operates.
