At the ESRF a task force has been created to coordinate efforts in the automation of beamlines. The first objective was to prepare the software infrastructure to provide for the high-throughput macromolecular crystallography beamlines. These developments are intended to profit to all the other ESRF beamlines to further advance in the automated operation of experiments. A detailed description of the developments is provided together with the presentation of the current status and results.
